Winter may get chilly in Tokyo but this month welcomes some of the hottest diary dates for lovers of modern art. The Art Fair: Plus-Ultra, attracts local and international visitors to the city’s airy, minimal Spiral Garden gallery, on the first floor of Minami-Aoyama’s mixed-use Spiral Building.
An annual two-part exhibition, running from 17-20 and 22-25 December, it spotlights exciting new multimedia artists presented by leading galleries (Plus) and pieces selected by a group of gallery directors (Ultra). Expect 40 gallery and director booths over the two periods, with many items up for sale.
With the exception of Paris’s Crossart gallery, the interesting thing here is that all the galleries are drawn from Japan. Tokyo is, of course, strongly represented but you will also spot offerings from Osaka, Hokkaido, Aichi, Hyogo, Kanagawa, Ishikawa and Saitama.
The audience can vote for their favourite show, with the Best Wall Prize going to the booth receiving the highest visitor numbers. The Best Sales Prize is awarded to the gallery or director with the highest sales.
Discover the next gen of Japanese creative talent, and tap into the latest art scene trends, while hanging with the culture crowd. The white geometric building, designed by architect Fumihiko Maki, is also worth an ogle as is the menu selection at convivial Spiral Cafe with tables alongside the gallery.
