The clue’s in the name. West Loop newcomer Bad Hunter is a proudly ‘veg-forward’ restaurant, celebrating the beauty of delicious, healthy vegetable dishes while still allowing punters a peck at quality fish and meats. With the wellbeing-boosting effects of eating your greens trending worldwide – along with the more worrying risks of our burger obsession – the time is ripe for upscale veg-focussed eateries.
Loved by critics and diners alike, the latest opening by Heisler Hospitality (of Pub Royale, Queen Mary Tavern, and neighbouring bar Lone Wolf acclaim) offers an all-day, hyper-local menu, which other than a few meat skewers, is mostly vegetarian. Chef Dan Snowden works the wood grill to amp up the veg-driven flavours at this comfy, convivial, informal space, where ‘sessionable’ eating means you can call in for lunch (11am-2pm), dinner (5-11pm), or just sit, sup n’ sip the afternoon away (2-5pm). The bar keeps pouring drinks till the wee hours (11am-2am).
Pretty plates span wood-grilled carrots and fennel, tempura-fried lemons and squash, and butter dumplings (think corn, shitake mushroom, Asian pear and oyster kimchi). Young quaffable wines (including a good selection of global orange vinos), beer and cider, and punchy cocktails accompany.
Interiors at this relaxed Randolph Row sanctuary feel like a mellow English garden, light and sunny with paved flooring, verdant plants and an earthy palette of tan leather furniture, wood and mirrors. Veg out…
