Neighbourhood Guide: Makati

Neighbourhood Guide: Makati
October 30, 2017

Metro Manila may be overflowing with some of the city’s best spots to see, sup n’ shop, but if you want to glean the very best in just one hit, look no further than its most stylish nook Makati, boasting everything from must-see cultural hotspots to world-class cocktail slingers.

Artsy outdoor Salcedo Saturday Market is one of the best places to get a taste of the neighbourhood. More than 90% of the stores specialise in artisan foodie finds from across the globe (so come hungry), but you can still pick up an array of verdant botanicals, crafty curios and more as you peruse the aisles. Pick up a trolley at the front and prepare to shop til you pop!

Or, hop on the retail trail at upscale Greenbelt mall where you’ll get a real-deal fash fix courtesy of an A-list lineup of Filipino and international designers across a range of clothing, homewares, and accessories. Some of our fave boutiques include curated concept shop Adora for his n’ her threads and beauty prods, and Eterno, stashing a chic edit of leather wallets and satchels.

Once you’ve scoped the stores, hop over to adjoining Glorietta for a second hit, with an excellent selection of goodies across all categories, including plenty for fams with tots in tow, as well as handy Nail It salon for quick tips n’ toes maintenance.

All shopped out? Culture vultures make a beeline for Ayala Museum, a four-floor mecca of displays which spotlight Filipino art and heritage, including an array of C.19th painting, illustration and sculptures by preeminent Filipino artists and brothers Justiniano, Leoncio and Mariano Asuncion as part of Art and Family: The Asuncion Legacy (until 14 Jan, 2018).

Alternatively, head to Washington Sycip Park, a sprawling green lung offering peaceful respite in the city centre (and a stone’s throw from Greenbelt Mall). Flop on the grass for the afternoon or take a scenic amble around the pretty ponds.

If cocktail hour is nigh, settle in for the evening at Makati’s The Blind Pig, a discreet and sultry lair where mixologist masters serve up a never-ending list of concoctions, including refreshing Mint Juleps to discerning drinkers, or take tipples at Exit where creative libations headline and rock n’ roll beats and a speakeasy-atmos back ‘em up. Cin cin!
