If you prefer your shopping sprees idiosyncratic, quirky and super-local, then West Loop’s Randolph Street Market Festival is a buzz. It’s a root-n-rummage urban jumble of antiques, decor, indie design, vintage clothing, and costume jewellery, plus a vinyl swap meet, global goods bazaar, and fancy food market.
Held the last weekend of every month at Chicago’s Plumbers Hall, the Summer Season kicks off with the Garden Party on 27 to 28 May. More than 300 vendors will hawk their wares over three floors, with sunny outdoor areas expanding the market from May through September. A beer garden, live music and entertainment keep the good times rolling.
Musos can flick through old LPs at the record fair. Craft lovers should seek out artisan goods from Chicago’s ethnic neighbourhoods. Design fans will find collectible MidWestern homewares galore.
Foodies will love the tasting booth including Ruffino Prosecco and Charles Smith Wines, or mix your own Bloody Marys at the Market Bar. For locally-made sweet treats and savoury goodies, to eat or take away, check out OMG! Chicago Olive Oils and Marinades and the Umami Gourmet Coffee and Exotic Tea Shop. Then again you could just hunt down Dia De Los Tamales or Dinky Donuts!
Gone crazy buying mid-century Eames furniture or African tribal figurines? There’s a delivery service if you don’t want to slip a disc on the way back to The Peninsula.
27-28 May, 2017 + every last w/end of the month until Oct (see website for Nov/Dec dates).
