08/10/2017

Following last year’s overwhelming success of Botero in China: Exhibition of Fernando Botero — the first ever retrospective of Fernando Botero’s works in China – The Peninsula Shanghai is honoured in the highly anticipated return of Botero this autumn.

The Peninsula Shanghai will bring Fernando Botero back to Shanghai by exhibiting two of his most iconic bronze sculptures in high traffic Bund-side locations administered by the hotel. The Bird and Reclining Woman with Apple – Botero’s last monumental sculpture – will be installed at Bund Entrance to The Peninsula Shanghai on The Bund and Yuanmingyuan Road, available for the enjoyment of both hotel patrons and the general public. Two of key Botero paintings will also hold residence at The Lobby of No.1 Waitanyuan. The sculptures and paintings will be exhibited at The Peninsula Shanghai for a period of one year.

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1932, and attended a matador school in his youth. He later studied art at Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. After his art began to achieve international acclaim in the 1970s, Botero moved to Paris. In the French capital, he began creating sculptures and later, the huge bronze figures that became his hallmark. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture award from the International Sculpture Centre. Today, his paintings and sculptures are exhibited around the world such as Park Avenue in New York City, the Champs-Élysées in Paris and Central Harbourfront in Hong Kong.

An unveiling ceremony for the unprecedented return of Botero’s iconic art pieces will take place at The Peninsula Shanghai on 19 October, 2017. The Grand Opening will be celebrated with an exclusive appreciation dinner in corporate with YPO (Young President's Organization) at Yi Long Court.
