The Peninsula Istanbul
The Peninsula Istanbul is thrilled to announce that it is the first and only hotel in Turkey to receive certification from BREEAM (the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method). The hotel was awarded the certificate at the “Excellent” level as an indicator of its outstanding efforts in the field of sustainability.
BREEAM is a global green-building certification system, which assesses the environmental performance and sustainability of construction projects and finished buildings. By earning the top level of BREEAM certification, The Peninsula Istanbul has demonstrated that its design, assembly, and performance all meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility. To merit its certification rating of “Excellent,” the hotel had to achieve exemplary scores in all ten of BREEAM’s key assessment criteria: energy, health and well-being, design innovation, land use, materials, management, pollution, transport, waste, and water.
“We are delighted to have received the BREEAM certificate at the completion of The Peninsula Istanbul’s first year," said Jonathan Crook, the hotel's Managing Director. "This recognition confirms that an ethos of environmental responsibility and sustainability inform every aspect of our operation – and we look forward to continuing that commitment moving forward.”
Among the features that helped The Peninsula Istanbul attain its certification are its rooftop Herb Garden, where vegetables, fruits, and herbs are cultivated in partnership with a local urban farming collective. As well as providing ingredients for the property’s culinary team, the expansive gardens offer hotel guests the opportunity to learn about rooftop agriculture. They also provide a verdant gathering space for special events and cocktail soirées.
The Peninsula Istanbul is also in the process of implementing many other environmentally-minded measures and practices – including those to further increase the hotel's energy efficiency, improve its waste management, and optimise its water usage. Through these measures, as well as by building meaningful relationships with local members of its community, The Peninsula Istanbul aims to set a new bar for sustainable hospitality in its home city.
