The Art of Pink Transforms The Peninsula New York

30/09/2016

The Peninsula New York inspires guests to once again celebrate all things pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October through the brand’s Peninsula in Pink initiative. To continue with the Art of Pink theme for the second year, the hotel is proud to partner with China’s most celebrated avant-garde photographer and multimedia artist, Chen Man with the debut of “Miss Wan Studies Hard.” This iconic photograph of a Chinese girl riding a 1980s-style bicycle through Tiananmen Square in Beijing while wearing a chic outfit by Dior challenges conceptions about women and fashion in modern China. The artwork is part of Chen Man’s “Nao Nao” (挠挠) collection, an exclusively commissioned series of interactive art pieces by Chen Man installed at all ten Peninsula destinations around the world.

The photograph is covered by two pink dots – symbols of breasts and the colon, punctuation that precedes a conversation. In a nod to The Peninsula Hotels’ focus on China this year to celebrate the recent renovation of The Peninsula Beijing, visitors may use traditional nao nao bamboo sticks to gently scrape the dots and slowly unveil the image behind. Chen Man’s inspiration for this installation stems from the Beijing of her childhood, where feelings and emotions were not shared publicly, and the selfless act of scratching a loved one’s back could best convey feelings of sympathy and understanding. Through this art and the unspoken, yet very physical interaction with it, she hopes that removal of the punctuation will open up a dialogue about breast cancer and bring awareness to the cause.

To raise additional funds in support of breast cancer awareness, The Peninsula New York partnered with the China Institute of New York to auction Chen Man's "Nao Nao" (挠挠) piece at their 90th Anniversary gala event held at Cipriani Wall Street on 27 October 2016. "Miss Wan Studies Hard" sold for an impressive US$ 45,000, with 100% of the proceeds donated to benefit the China Institute and Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Chen Man was present at the event and also provided the inaugural scratch for the artwork.
