Hola España!

El Lugar

The last 12 months have seen an almost tidal influx of tapas restaurants across the globe, from Hong Kong (Boqueria, 22 Ships, Vi Cool and Manila (COVA, El Cirkulo), to New York (Manzanilla) and Shanghai (de Bellotas). But Bangkok had largely sidestepped the burgeoning trend… until now. With the Japanese cuisine craze abating ever so slightly and the opening of buzzing Sukhumvit Soi 23’s new wine n’ small-plater El Lugar, we ask the pertinent question: could the Spanish invasion finally have reached the Big Mango? We certainly hope so.

Debuting with a colourful, contemporary style that would not be out of place on a bustling Barcelona avenue, El Lugar (translating in English to “The Place”) melds a fun, funky tapas bar downstairs, featuring boldly-patterned walls, marble counter seating and Moorish arches, and a more elevated affair in the upstairs dining room, with its quieter atmosphere and pared-back décor. On the plate, classics reign supreme, like albondigas (meatball with tomato sauce), almejas marinera (clams in white wine sauce), slow-roasted pork belly, and both traditional seafood paella as well as a squid ink variation. Naturally there’s a supporting cast of Latin wines by way of accompaniment including Spain’s Marqués de Riscal, and be sure to save room for a plate of the delectable churros with lemon sorbet. Viva El Lugar!
