A Little Light Entertainment?

Magnificent Mile Lights Festival
The days in Chicago might be growing shorter, but on the city’s main shopping strip the advent of the holiday season means the arrival of sights bright and blazing.

Next week marks the return of the annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, a one-evening extravaganza of dazzling illumination displays, dancing processions, fireworks and musical performances.

The entertainment kicks off with a series of family-friendly activities around Pioneer Court, ranging from games and face-painting to appetite-whetting food tents and cockle-warming hot toddy stands.

But, what is a street party without a soundtrack? Well, this year’s tunes come courtesy of kiddie-rock outfit Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players, plus jazz cat Charles Perry and others.

As the sun goes down the main event starts up with the Tree-Lighting Parade along North Michigan Avenue. Branches will bloom with millions of twinkling fairy lights, while at street level there’ll be a dozen flashing, fluorescent floats led by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, as well as marching bands and dancers.

And to finish, what else but a fleet of fireworks? Boom!
