Shakespeare Smash
January 04, 2017

He’s famous for manipulating the audience, blurring truth and fiction, and preying on people’s prejudices and fears… Shakespeare’s sadistic anti-hero Iago could be mistaken for a current-day politician, with his sneaky, self-serving machinations, and boasts more lines than hero Othello in this timelessly shocking tragedy.

Sam Gold’s incisive, brutalist staging of Othello at New York Theatre Workshop features a contemporary military setting and ferocious performances from Daniel Craig as Iago and David Oyelowo as Othello. The talented pair both bring serious props to this production, with Craig a global cine-star for his darkly charismatic turns as English spy James Bond, and British-Nigerian actor Oyelowo known both as a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company on stage and for his strong screen roles as Martin Luther King Jr in 2014 film Selma and in recent flicks The Queen of Katwe and A United Kingdom (about a Ugandan chess prodigy and interracial marriage respectively).

As the two stars face off in this modern-dress production, Craig works his trademark charm and rebellious spirit, while Oyelowo brings moral decency to the flawed character of a Venetian general destroyed by jealousy, love, pride and his own weaknesses – as well as the secretive attacks of the evil Iago.

The intimate off-Broadway setting has made Othello one of the hottest theatre tickets in town, so book quick or attend the 12 January Benefit Performance. A must-see.

Until 18 Jan, 2017.
