Frieze Frame

In celebration of Frieze New York art fair, The Peninsula New York introduces Frieze Frame, an exhibition of new artworks, paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs by 10 contemporary masters in partnership with Circa 1881 and Josh Lilley Gallery, on display through 31 May 2017. 

All artists featured in Frieze Frame are concurrently represented at Frieze New York and some of New York City’s most renowned art institutions, including The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as prestigious international venues, such as Tate Modern. Featuring over 200 contemporary and modern gallery exhibits from over 30 countries, Frieze New York showcases an unparalleled program of ambitious presentations by today’s most significant and international artists.

Installed throughout the public spaces of The Peninsula New York, the exhibition is part of Circa 1881’s ongoing partnership with The Peninsula Hotels to present rotating art exhibitions of world-class contemporary art. Josh Lilley Gallery, a leading participant in Frieze New York, is a London based gallery representing emerging and mid-career artists who specializes in bringing young American and European artists into the British conversation for the first time.

Upper Lobby

The hotel’s upper lobby will feature the 2016 video piece Paperboy (on Blue Dashes) by Brian Bress, a Los Angeles-based artist exhibiting at Frieze New York, who’s video works will also be featured on billboards in Times Square during Frieze New York as part of the Public Art Fund’s city-wide exhibition program, Commercial Break. 

Flanking the walls in the upper lobby seating area, are over-sized paintings from two international artists, Rub by John Armleder and Accident by Michael Armitage.

In the hotel’s Palm Court, Two Suns by Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas is a finely detailed imitation of a Medieval sculpture. Known for his ephemeral, site-specific installations, Adrián Villar Rojas has been selected to create an installation for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Roof Garden this summer. At 36, Villar Rojas is the youngest artist to be chosen for the commission. Larry Bell's Untitled sculpture from 1985 is currently featured in the Whitney Biennial.

A newly completed work, Untitled by Kathleen Ryan, which features a group of ceramic birds perched on found clothing display hoops, will grace the hotel’s grand staircase arch. The work, which was recently shown by Josh Lilley at The Armory Show in New York, was designated as one of the top 10 works to see by Artnews.

Gotham Lounge

Gotham Lounge features four new large-scale pieces from US and international artists. Black Bars: T1000 imagery comes from the movie Terminator 2 and features artist Kathryn Andrews' signature use of metallic surfaces. Jordan Wolfson's Untitled minimalist composition features popular images and cartoons from the twentieth century. In the Shanghai Night photograph, globally recognized photographer Wolfgang Tillman's style of pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique and the persistent questioning of existing values and hierarchies is clearly displayed. British artist Nick Goss used thin, delicate washes punctuated by heavy brushstrokes in Backwater.
