In July 2020, Mr. Joseph Chong was appointed to the position of Regional Area Vice President, Asia, The Peninsula Hotels, whilst continuing his role as Managing Director of The Peninsula Hong Kong, a position that he took up in 2017. Mr. Chong is also a member of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited’s (HSH) Group Management Board.

During his distinguished career, Mr. Chong has for more than two decades held a number of senior leadership positions at various hotel properties in The Peninsula portfolio.

In 2000, he joined The Peninsula Beijing (formerly The Palace Hotel Beijing) as Director of Rooms and was subsequently promoted to Resident Manager at The Peninsula Bangkok in 2007. In 2009, Mr. Chong was further promoted to the position of Hotel Manager at The Peninsula Shanghai, during the landmark property’s pre-opening phase, when he played a key role in the launch of the hotel, ultimately taking up the position of General Manager in 2011, before being appointed to the additional post of Managing Director of The Peninsula Shanghai Complex.

In 2019, Mr. Chong was promoted to become Area Vice President, Greater China and Managing Director, The Peninsula Hong Kong, overseeing the operation of three Peninsula properties in China.

Mr. Chong is also Director of a number of HSH entities in Hong Kong, Beijing and Manila.

A native of Malaysia, Mr. Chong received his first degree in Hotel Management from l’Institut International d'Hôtellerie et de Tourisme de Toulouse Midi Pyrenees (Malaysia and France) and began his hospitality career in the front office of The Regent Kuala Lumpur in 1989. He progressed to hold various positions at The Regent Hotels in Bangkok and Jakarta, as well as Four Seasons properties in Bali and Singapore.

Mr. Chong simultaneously continued his studies by completing further education courses at the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University (U.S.) and the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. He is currently a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality (FIH) in the United Kingdom.

A husband and father of two children, Mr. Chong is active within many charitable organisations. He is a Director of the Make-A-Wish International Board and has also acted as a founding Director of the Make-A-Wish China Board since its inception in 2016. In 2022, he was appointed as Honorary Director of The Duke of Edinburgh International Awards, China. Mr Chong has also been an Honorary Trustee of Raleigh China (a United Kingdom-based youth charity), and a former Trustee of the Library Project China Board.

From 2023 to 2025, Mr. Chong is serving on the Advisory Committee of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and continues to act as an Advisor to the Shanghai K Foundation.

In 2017, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the city of Shanghai, Mr. Chong was presented with The Magnolia Award by the Municipal Government.

In his leisure time, he enjoys target archery as a member of Royal Perak Archers & Shooters Club and practices regularly at the indoor range of the South China Athletic Association in Hong Kong.
