Imagine if you could shop for your fave gourmet treats while snacking in style? Well, now you can, thanks to the arrival of Bangkok’s delicious destination El Mercado.
Named after the Spanish word for ‘market’, this deli-diner, set in a charming renovated house with leafy contemporary patio, is attracting a well-heeled Thai/expat crowd with its seasonal bistro-style fare, laid-back ambi and expansive wine list. It’s excellent for a chilled brunch, but also allows you to stock up on chic Euro and local deli produce including covetable fresh and dry goods.
Aimed at foodies and pro chefs with pocket-pleasing prices, the deli is divided into four areas fringing the patio. Make for The Market for top-grade seafood, charcuterie, cheeses, butter, and fruit and veg. Pop into the Patisserie for baked bliss, with breads and pastries produced by Bangkok’s rated baker Amantee. The Organic Shop is your go-to for larder lovelies, from spices to rice, pasta, oils and coffee. Wobble over to the Wine Cellar for Old World drops drawn mainly from Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Austria.
Take your treasures away or settle in at the informal terrace-toting Brasserie, where chef Jeremy Tourret’s seasonal dishes of the day are sourced from the sea, earth or farm. You can also taste oysters, top drops and cold cuts at the bar while you shop. Walk off those cals afterwards in nearby Benjakiti Park. Deli-ghtful!
