In steamy summertime Tokyo, an icy sweet treat can be the difference between cool, calm collectedness, and expiring in a hot and bothered heap, so it’s little wonder that kakigori – Japan’s answer to the snow cone – has long been a beloved seasonal mainstay for Tokyoites. Like its burgeoning hometown, this fast, fresh, and customisable favourite is moving with the times, with new kakigori café Yelo in Roppongi rebooting the classic dish via an updated preparation technique and a range of inventive flavours from organic carrot mascarpone to sweetened avocado.

Unlike traditional kakigori, Yelo’s flavoured sauces are made with fresh (rather than condensed) milk, which doesn’t weigh down the fluffy, fairy-floss texture of the whipped ice crystals. The main menu has ten regular items, including a rich tiramisu made with real coffee and cocoa powder, and the luscious Four Berry, plus one rotating item that makes use of seasonal fruits. Extra toppings like crushed Oreo cookies, desiccated coconut, and gummi drops can be added as desired. Diners can enjoy their icy indulgence to-go in a paper cone or inside at the café’s small seating area, with a complimentary cup of green tea to chase off the unavoidable brain freeze. Yelo is open year-round and extra late, so sweet-tooths can sate their cravings whenever suits, plus in the evenings, you can spike your ice with something a little stronger – think tequila infused strawberry or coffee with hazelnut liqueur.
