Let it Snow

May 18, 2015
Snow Picnic
Land of the Rising Sun? In summer it certainly feels like it, especially in the oft-sultry capital where even locals can be seen fanning themselves with frantic, clammy abandon.

But fortunately for wilting visitors and Tokyoites alike, some sweet, icy inner-city respite is on offer at Nakano’s Snow Picnic, an ice-cream dream where cloud-like frozen concoctions are whipped up right before your eyes using fresh fruits, nuts and liquid nitrogen.

With soothing blue and green pastel walls, parquetry flooring and a few natty zoological accents, the pint-sized parlour sports a definite tropi-cool ‘50s vibe. Slip past the modish couch and two-seaters to get to the rear counter where a pair of ‘gelatistes’ man two heavy-duty mixmasters and a chalkboard menu lists the weekly changing selections. Just don’t bet on finding any plain old vanilla ice here...

Rather, you can expect inventive, fully customisable creations like honey cumquat with walnuts, green tea, choc-espresso avocado, or sweet chestnut – simply pick your flavours and stand back as the fellas get smokin’. But a few seconds later you’ll be served a cup of light n’ airy delight to enjoy on-the-go or at the central communal table.

And for those that take their cream with caffeine (sensitive teeth be warned!), Snow Picnic also brews a pretty jippy java, as well as a rather splendid selection of house-made sodas. Let it snow!
