Powder Power

November 30, 2015
Top Ski Season Day Trips
Although it may feel, at times, there’s simply no escaping this non-stop, neon-lit Nippon sprawl, between the wintry months of December and May, a quick shinkansen’s skip from Tokyo Station will land you on some of the most pic-perfect pistes of Japan. Snow problem!

In as little as 75 minutes, adrenaline junkies and snow bunnies itching to sate their powder passions will pull into Gala Yuzawa. Disembark from the train, pick up some spic-and-span rental gear (from goggles to suits) and a day-pass, then board the 800m-long gondola that’ll whip you directly up the mountain from the train station.

Intrepid alpine adventurers should keep going for an additional 50 minutes on a bus to Kawaba, a lesser-known spot popular with locals and novice snowboarders for its gentle but moderately challenging slopes.

Alternatively, if it’s off-piste thrills you seek, hop off at Echigo-Yuzawa, and take the 20-minute shuttle to the impressive Naeba resort. The gondola climbs as far as 3,000 ft above the valley floor – satisfying every backcountry trail-blazer’s deepest desires – plus you’ll have access to state-of-the-art equipment (from the South Gate or Day Trip Ski Centre), a number of excellent guides who’ll help you find first-rate untracked lines, as well as hot springs and a fancy array of dining options for the all-important après-ski!
