Nippon-Franco Fashion

221 Restir
On the runways of Paris, Japanese fashion mainstays like Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto never seem to go out of style, but it would be fair to counter that Tokyo is just as enamoured with a certain Gallic je ne sais quoi. The Roppongi flagship of local Francophile brand Restir is a prime case in point.

Stepping through the glass and brick fronted facade of the brand’s tri-level concept space, 221 Restir, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d floated into a modish, monochrome Riviera cafe, with a cluster of fold-out tables along the front pavement, surfboards and a splash of arty ocean pics – admittedly the latter look a little more like Kamakura than Cannes. Cruise over to the bar where you can fuel up with a fresh fruit juice before surfing the shelves.

Down in the basement the aesthetic moves from coast to urban-chic with striped sofas and stark white walls strung with top gal gear and accessories by Nippon-based brand Le Ciel Bleu – think floaty feather-edged tees, wide-leg trousers, tailored dresses and cute collared blouses. Or dashing dandies can ascend to the second floor for dark denim, caps and streetwear by HL, plus suits, snug-fit shirts and checkered bow ties by AMéLIE. Si belle!
