Swish Fish Sky-high

September 16, 2014
Fish Bank
Given its sky-high setting 41 floors atop the sleek Shiodome City Center building, with breath-snatching views of central Tokyo on all sides, French-influenced Fish Bank’s food faces a tall order in matching up to the lofty locale. But the fresh, deftly-prepared seafood does indeed do justice to its swish surrounds, and teamed with faultless service and a chic glassy bar overflowing with Brut bubbles, the resulting fine dine experience is certainly one that’s hard to top.

The pared-back, mod-monochrome dining room is sharply sophisticated, but purposefully simple so as not to draw diners’ eyes from the twinkling city views afforded by the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. But if anything is likely to catch your gaze, it’s the towers of fresh shellfish and perfectly plated Bluefin tuna ready and waiting to be sampled. Start with the sharable seafood platter stacked with sea urchin flan, Japanese oysters, marinated shrimp and crab claws before moving on to the daily market fish for mains – or, better still, let the chef choose with a set lunch or degustation dinner menu. Besides stellar seafood, there’s also dry aged Tokachi beef steak, confit duck and freshly-made burnt butter pasta, plus light and refreshing desserts like the fromage blanc bavarois with melon soup. Round off with a postprandial martini or single-malt whisky in the adjoining Majestic Bar and Lounge, and be sure to toast the high life!
