Do the Fandango

Flamenco Festival
A little over 400 years ago, samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and his band of merry men left their native Japan and travelled over land and sea until they eventually reached their destination – Coria del Río, just outside Seville. There to request certain trade agreements, what they actually came away with was a relationship that went much deeper. Fast-forward four centuries and the bilateral friendship is as tight as ever; celebrated by Tokyo’s Flamenco Festival held at Shibuya’s Tokyu Theatre Orb.

This year’s fiesta sees two spectacular shows grace the Nippon capital. The first – directed and choreographed by one of Spain’s best-loved flamenco stars Sara Baras – is a tribute to the folk music and dance that has had hands clapping and fingers snapping for hundreds of years.

Inspired by some of the greatest flamenco artists of all time, including Paco de Lucia, Antonio Gades and Carmen Amaya, the Voces, Suite Flamenca features 15 performers on stage who build towards a breathtaking improvised finale.

The second of the performances, Imágenes, comes courtesy of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía and commemorates its 20 years at the forefront of dance in Spain. Artistic Director Rafaela Carrasco and her carefully selected cast members revisit and refresh five influential works from the company’s repertoire. So dust off those castanets and let the rhythm take you, ay!
