Anglo Style

June 06, 2016
Paul Smith
Britain’s First Gentleman of Fashion, Paul Smith is an original. Despite a lifelong love affair with clothing, stretching back to his first store in English hometown Nottingham, it’s his 360-degree eye for style that has given his brand global staying power. A curious magpie, he’s famous for finding inspiration everywhere, from cycling to art, architecture and vintage finds. His classic-with-a-twist mens and womenswear appeals to creative fans.

A new Paul Smith boutique then is always a treat, even in Japan, which boasts more than 200 stores nationwide. Smith fell in love with Japanese culture, and Japan has paid him back with huge customer loyalty. His latest shop in chic Roppongi is worth the pilgrimage. On the ground-floor of a modern mid-rise, the sleek, glassy exterior sports colour blocks in red, pink and black, reminiscent of Mexican architect Luis Barragán, including a large geometric sign, display storage and a wavy curtain-like wall.

Once inside the curving white-toned space, a long wall of paintings, prints and posters is displayed floor-to-ceiling in mismatched frames, salon-style. Site-specific furniture includes bespoke cabinets and a restored Italian dining table. Vibrant colour-blocking continues with a cobalt geometric display frame and stairs painted in yellow and peach. Swish flooring contrasts herringbone parquet with concrete panels.

Tear your peepers away from the stripy armchairs, and you’ll find guy’s and gal’s threads, a T-shirt zone, covetable accessories and select limited-edition pieces.
