Vista Tryster

July 13, 2015
8 ½ Terrace Bar
Whether you’ve spent a gruelling day behind a desk, or an afternoon exhausting your credit card, the arrival of a summer’s eve heralds your hour of just reward. To collect it, simply ascend to the rooftop of old Shanghai’s Associate Mission Building and assume your position at Otto e Mezzo’s recently re-opened 8 ½ Terrace Bar.
Perfectly positioned for pre- or post-prandials – accompanied by eye-popping Bund-and-beyond views – this stylista sipster boasts quality cocktails that mirror the fab fare served by Bombana and crew just downstairs, plus a snappy selection of small bites if you’d rather not make the fine-dining descent. Mixing things up behind the bar is innovative Italian talent Domenico Carella, who’s in Shanghai especially to oversee proceedings.
He believes – and who are we to disagree – that the smallest of sips should be able to whisk you far, far away, and has designed the drinks menu accordingly. Sample the 8 ½ Punch Bowl, a flirtatious blend of gin, lime, white wine, ginger liqueur, cloves and fresh fruit, and observe as the cityscape melts away to reveal a pretty-as-a-picture pastoral picnic. Or if a cooling sylvan scene is more your thing, try the Carella-original Woodland ‘tail, a surprising, heady melange of (bear with us) porcini-infused voddy, yellow Chartreuse and crème de cassis with a slice of mushroom and slivered licorice root to boot. Aah, that’s better.
