New Icon: Shanghai Tower

Shanghai Tower

Towering – literally – over the Pudong financial district, at 632 metres, China’s tallest tower (the second tallest in the world after Dubai’s cloud-scraping Burj Khalifa) offers jaw-dropping views of the city. LUXE spills the beans on this vertiginous new attraction…

From a distance, Shanghai Tower’s twisted, 120-degree-torqued shape is said to represent a dragon emerging from the earth, and you’ll be spiralling skywards when you visit this glossy glamourpuss. Boasting 127 floors, including five underground, this lofty edifice by US architects Gensler includes nine zones of shops, entertainment venues, offices, indoor gardens, a museum and the all-important observation deck, the world’s highest (at 561 metres), on the 119th floor.

Beforehand, check out the interactive mini skyscraper museum in the entrance hall, with multimedia images, time-lapse videos and 3D holographs detailing Shanghai’s highest havens, and this sustainable tower’s vital statistics. The observation deck is reached by express lift, which at 18 metres a second is the world’s fastest; you’ll arrive in under a minute so hold onto your hat!

Once there, you’ll enjoy 360-degree, Insta-worthy panoramas of the heritage Bund district, meandering Huangpu River, Pudong’s futuristic buildings and the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower. Neighbouring towers in the burgeoning Lujiazui financial district are dwarfed, including Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower. Wander the whole floor and take in those vistas. The world’s highest restaurant and pool are in the pipeline…
