Hidden Nippon Nook

May 04, 2015

Despite its location in a warehouse big enough to accommodate a well-attended sumo convention, neo-Nippon resto Shintori certainly isn’t an easy place to find. Hidden as it is behind an unmarked doorway and nondescript grey wall on Julu Lu, one would never suspect what lies within… that is, if it weren’t for the stylishly outfitted folk that flit through the entrance every few minutes. But get spruced up and follow suit, and you’ll discover one seriously industrial-cool dining destination repping a solid selection of Japanese bites and sake nips.

Skip along the bamboo-lined path that leads from the street-side door to emerge before a massive, glassy bi-level. Inside the scene is kept modern and minimal with chic polished concrete stretching from floor to lofty ceiling, two on-show kitchen stations, and a mixture of bar-style and standard seating. Those after some omakase theatrics can snag a stool at the sushi counter where yanagi-wielding chefs slice up salmon and tuna sashimi; otherwise keep it intimate with a perch in one of the private alcoves paired with a la carte offerings like foie gras set on radish salad, chilled udon noodles or the mouth-watering grilled cod. Just ensure you save space for the tempting dessert selection, and don’t miss a quick trip to the very zen restrooms.
