Chinese Fash Cache

February 23, 2015
Rachelle Jim

It’s no secret that for some years now the world’s front-row fashion pack has been drawn to China’s growing cache of homegrown contemporary designers, with lady of leather MaryH opening her flagship store to much acclaim in Shanghai, Uma Wang turning heads in Milan, and Simon Gao air-kissing in Paris. Another beacon of style blinking on our fashion radar is Hong Kong-born, Shanghai-based designer Rachelle Jim, whose eponymous womenswear label made noted appearances at Paris Fashion Week 2012 and London Fashion Week 2014.

Jim’s training as a civil engineer and architect (she graduated from the Rutgers and New Jersey Institute of Technology), is evident throughout her work. Each piece from the latest collection – from the sleeveless cocktail dresses in wool to the pink full-length trench coats to the asymmetric jackets of her trouser suits – exhibits her flair for subtle geometric silhouettes and clean lines. It seems that architecture’s loss is fashion’s gain, as this designer’s star is clearly rising. Make a beeline to LUXE fave Dong Liang, where you’ll find the Rachelle Jim collection, among three floors of local up-and-coming talent. Purses out and say Shang-hi to your new wardrobe!
