Strictly Designers United

While the moniker might suggest that Shanghai concept store Strictly Designers United is strictly about designer wares, in reality this sprawling South Bund space embraces just about every artistic pursuit. Serving as a much needed nexus for the city’s entire creative community, it not only acts as a showcase for the works of local artists and fashion aces (think Alex Zheng and Xue Liang), but also plays host to vangarde theatrical performances and some seriously showy dinners.

Founded by expat furniture designer Cengiz Orhan, the vast converted warehouse is packed concrete floor to steel pillared ceiling with natty objets, ranging from vintage-inspired accessories and edgy 3D apparel to paintings and sculptures by emerging Chinese artists, as well as Orhan’s own custom-made wares (as seen in swish sipper el Ocho and tapas sis Tomatito). Newer additions to the ever-evolving collection include shade-throwing chandeliers by New Zealander David Trubridge and an expanding edit of Dutch-designed items, but visitors might also stumble upon the odd runway show, collaborative workshop or, of an evening, indie film screenings and progressive plays. Win over the owner and you might even score an invite to one of Strictly’s secret pop-up dinners where the cream of Asia’s art scene gets together to feast and frolic.
