L’Heure de Goûter

July 02, 2015
Les Deux Abeilles
Beneath the crisscrossed shadow cast by Paris’ most iconic structure, and just a few Repetto steps from Invalides, lies a tucked-away treasure the swarms have yet to reach. Duck inside Les Deux Abeilles and discover a world that’s overseen by two busy little bees – a dynamic mother-daughter duo – and where the clock is forever frozen at that most bewitching time for les enfants français; l’heure de goûter.

The patrons of this establishment, however, are of a decidedly better-heeled variety than the carping little creatures that pour out of the school gates in search of their mamans, or more accurately, their gourmet goodies. Sophisticates, lady-lunchers and even the chronically cloaked Diane Pernet count this chintzy tea house among their best-kept secrets, and now, so do you.
Floral wallpaper, vintage mirrors, an antique Welsh dresser and indoor arboreal elements evoke an ambience that’s less seventh arrondissement, more English country garden, while sweet and savoury delights come straight from your great grandmère’s recipe book.

Carpaccio de Saint Jacques and a kaleidoscope of quiches keep those lacking a sweet tooth happy, but for most the draw is the homemade desserts. Gorge gateaux, confitures and a spectac tarte tatin should keep the pud purists quiet, as will the superb selection of teas. However, you really must try the oh-so refreshing citronnade au gingembre – ooh la la, on a faim.
