Just say “Fromage”!

Le Mois de la Photo
Instagram is fuelling our passion for stylish snaps, but society’s love affair with photography goes way back. Celebrating the art of imagery this April, Le Mois de la Photo is a month-long photography festival across the Paris region. An important and fascinating celebration of the world’s finest photographic talent, it’s one of the events of the year for the city’s creative crowd. Just say, “fromage”!

Founded in 1980, the photography biennale takes place across atmospheric art venues, embracing 96 shows. The action divides into three geographic zones, each highlighted over a dedicated weekend: North-East (8-9 Apr), South-West (22-23 Apr) and Diagonale, in central Paris (29-30 Apr).
Five must-sees include South-West’s Henri Cartier-Bresson: Images à la Sauvette (until 23 Apr) at Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, sharing original prints from the French icon’s seminal book The Decisive Moment. Also catch Erwin Blumenfeld: Studio Blumenfeld New York 1940-1960 (until 4 Jun) at Les Docks, Cité de la Mode et du Design, examining the US photographer’s colour fashion shoots for Harper’s and Vogue.

In Diagonale, Josef Koudelka, La Fabrique d’Exils (until 22 May) showcases the Czech-French Magnum photographer’s powerful ‘Exiles’ shots and self-portraits at Centre Pompidou, which also hosts legendary US docu-photographer Walker Evans (until 14 Aug).

Finally, catch group show Portrait d’Europe, 1960-80 (until 31 May) at Magnum Photos, including pictures of different nationalities by Constantine Manos, Bruno Barbey, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martin Parr. Snap that!
