ZZ's Clam Bar

It’s true some of New York’s most sought-after packages are small and pricey – and now along with a Tiffany’s box, rhinoplasty and their first city apartment, Gothamites can welcome to the fold ZZ’s Clam Bar, aka Rich Torrisi and Mario Carbone’s new seafood-focused 12-seater in Greenwich Village. Marking the fifth outing for the team (who already have Torrisi and Carbone, as well as Parm sandwich shop to their credit), ZZ’s – diminutive though it may be – is a careful study in big flavours, refined delivery and rather hefty price points. In short, a fantasy space for the owners to indulge their obsession for uber-haute seafood and cocktails.

Its intimate, character-packed atmosphere, doorman-manned entrance, checked flooring and crystal chandelier hint at a secret supperclub MO, but glowing reviews thus far have dispelled all hopes of ZZ’s flying under the radar. Small plates run the oceanic and pricing gamut from cured Japanese sardine with strawberry and fennel ($18), to lobster ceviche with coconut and chili ($28), to shimaaji tartar with caviar and ricotta (a cool $95), with raw bar accompaniments and slathered ‘toasts’ topped succulent beef and slabs of the creamiest uni. The cocktail program offers similarly artistic and glamorous craft creations; the Pineapple with American gin, house limoncello and chamomile is presented in a vintage, namesake-inspired vessel under a mound of crushed ice.
