Cutting-Edge Crafts

November 21, 2013

There’s no shortage of modish clothing outlets in New York, least of all in Brooklyn – home of the young and fashion au fait – but then Williamsburg boutique Swords-Smith isn’t interested in attracting the affections of the trend-hungry crowd.

Touting a tight edit of his-n-hers wear plus offbeat accessories, owners Briana Swords, Ryan Smith and Nicole Lane Fulmer prefer to class Swords-Smith as a store devoted to supplementing the individual look, with artisanal, high quality threads crafted by up-and-coming designers from around the world.

The roomy and architectural loft space houses around 60 designers, along with an in-house line, and a slew of accessories like lambskin bags from Rabbitneck + Dotty, feathery neckchains by Mirit Weinstock and flat-top sunglasses by Super. The womenswear collection dominates the racks with silk dresses from London designer Charlotte Taylor, sophisty swimwear by Lauren Moffatt, and avant-garde shoes from Portuguese label Guava.

But menswear is nevertheless well represented with mod jackets from Lucio Castro, Japanese cotton shirts from Canadian label 18 Waits, and quirky motiffed tees and sweatshirts by Danish label Soulland. In addition to shopping, be sure to check out the fab gallery space out back, usually host to some manner of art or design installation – crafty, or what!
