Open House New York
Love a good snoop? Then pop along to the annual weekend-long, wildly popular, citywide Open House New York, which invites the general public to explore historic buildings, architectural masterpieces, contemporary spaces and sundry landmarks that are normally off limits.
By opening buildings that people walk past every day, the event hopes to foster a dialogue about architecture, urban design and city living. Taking place on 15 and 16 October, 2016’s Big Apple event will see hundreds of sites across the five boroughs unlock their portals, including a smorgasbord of residential and office spaces, heritage and modern, industrial and cultural. Tours, talks, performances and special experiences add spice to the mix, with the chance to meet and mingle with some of the designers and architects themselves.
This year’s list includes the landmark Town Hall Theater, the vertiginous rooftop observatory of new condo 50 West, abandoned rail line park project the QueensWay, and Nowadays, a mellow beer garden/live music venue. Look out for the OHNY Weekend print and downloadable pdf guide, or follow on social media for info updates. The Launch Party at new design space A/D/O by nARCHITECTS in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is on Thursday 13 October and should prove a packed kickstarter. Remember, while most highlights are free, reservations are required for some sites and programmes, so get in quicksticks. Wear flat shoes and Insta away!
