How To… Do Macy’s With The Fam

Forget the US elections – the big news in America right now is Thanksgiving, celebrated with turkey feasts, family gatherings and spectacular street festivals. Lucky enough to be in The Big Apple for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? LUXE shares some savvy family-oriented tips on how to ace the occasion...

A fun pre-Turkey Day event is Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Inflation (Wed 23 Nov), held near the American Museum of Natural History, which naturally, should be teamed with a peek inside one of our favourite kid-friendly cultural institutions.

The 90th Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade starts at 9am on Thanksgiving Day (Thu 24 Nov). Children will love the giant helium balloons of Hello Kitty and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, marching bands, clowns, cheerleaders and floats. A stellar line-up of celebs is also joining the parade, including crooner Tony Bennett, singer Sarah McLachlan and band De La Soul, but the stars of the show are puppet royalty The Muppets. Throw in the cast of hit musical Hamilton and a few US Olympic gold medallists, and you’re guaranteed a good time.

Kicking off at W 77th Street and Central Park West, the route heads down the park side, swings left at Columbus Circle, then moseys down 6th Avenue before turning right into West 34th St to Macy’s. Top viewing spots include Central Park West (from 75th Street downwards on the west side), Columbus Circle (from the shopping malls’ upper floors), and Sixth Avenue between 59th and 38th Streets.

After the procession, head over to the magical Bryant Park Winter Village to warm up with a few heart-racing spins of the twinkly ice-skating rink, then shop some of the many crafty stalls (great for Christmas gifting), and gorge yourselves on all sorts of gourmet goodies, from fresh-baked donuts to juicy burgers, in true American Thanksgiving style. Well it would be rude not to!
