Asian Bistro

December 05, 2013

What’s the old adage? If it at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Which is precisely what Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto has done to the space formerly known as Tribeca Canvas, the restaurant he opened in 2012 to almost universally underwhelming notices. Ahem. Moving swiftly on, this new iteration, Bisutoro, looks all set to re-straighten his crown, and if early reviews are anything to go by it’ll be a fitting companion for the spectacularly successful Morimoto chain that now numbers six establishments. And it’s not just a cursory name change, but a full interior fitout that greets Tribeca diners now, with a rich and sensory overload of redolent brick and crimson highlights, plus dynamic murals courtesy of street artist Charlie Doves.

On the menu, Asian-inspired bistro food means the likes of mushroom onion soup dumplings with kabocha squash puree and panko-crisped maitake, wagyu carpaccio with shiokoji (rice malt fermented with salt), capers and parmesan, and sake mussels with chorizo and handcut fries. A small, but flavour-packed bar menu is available for light or late diners featuring chicken karaage and goat cheese-stuffed shishito peppers, as well as a suite of Japanese whiskies and cocktails built around them. Tribeca here we come!
