Brooklyn Beauty

September 19, 2013

First came Torst, with its polished chevron panelling and accents of cool white marble, now following on from this success Evan and Oliver Haslegrave (the brothers behind hip Brooklyn-based design firm home) have conceptualised hip sippery-diner Alameda. A hard act to follow indeed, but the latter doesn’t disappoint with gleaming horseshoe bar, glossy white tiles set above maple panelling, hexagonal wooden tables mirrored by vintage mirrors, and industrial black ceiling fans. Behind the magnificent bar you’ll find Waine Longwell pouring moreish cocktails, and behind the stoves is Nick Padilla – both alums of nabe stalwart The Brooklyn Star.

Classic American fare is the mainstay of Padilla’s tightly-curated menu which more than makes up for what it lacks in length with sheer inventiveness. Star of the show is the madly decadent foie gras breakfast sandwich filled with crispy bacon, smoked cheddar, poached egg, pickled shallots, and apple butter, while fresh oysters in a cucumber mignonette make a fabulous accompaniment to Longwell’s homemade vermouths and bitters.

Already packed out with the Greenpoint in-crowd, Alameda doesn’t accept reservations so be prepared for a wait at the bar where you can sample cocktails like the Roberto Burns, a smoky mezcal mixed with sweet Carpano Antica, orange bitters and a curl of rind. Manhattan who?!
