Hot on the heels of last year’s wine-centric openings CAV and Sip & Gogh, Manila’s latest oenophile destination Planet Grapes has landed in the burgeoning Bonifacio Global City, but unlike its predecessors, the newcomer is aiming squarely at an unexpected group of wine appreciators – the novices. With its motto, “discover wine, one grape at a time,” PG’s offering preludes sister establishment Wine Story’s more sophisticated and pricey iteration, giving an until now underrepresented market segment their segue into the vast and complex world of wine.
The first string in PG’s bow: a far-from-stuffy, industrial bi-level space fit-out with lashings of stainless steel, and Italian-made Enomatic wine dispensers lining the walls. The next step: a wine list spanning more than 140 bottles from both the Old and New Worlds and grouped by varietal, with no less than 16 labels available by the ‘sip’, ‘half glass’ or ‘full glass’ courtesy of the Enomatics. And finally: a similarly casual feeling menu of simple street food plates like pork siumai (dumplings), squid balls, spiced chicken fillet, deli platters, and baked camembert. They say it’s “wine without the drama.” We say it’s the beginning a beautiful relationship.
