Purveyors of Pinoy Perfection

October 10, 2016

Known for crafts and design inspired by natural materials, the Philippines has a reputation for spectacular outdoor furniture, as well as sinuous lighting and homewares. Award-winning designer Kenneth Cobonpue is the most famous name in the frame, described as ‘rattan’s first virtuoso’, with a talent for bending eco-friendly natural fibres to his will.

Keen to spot the next hot talent? FAME is a bi-annual showcase of everything Pinoy – from furniture and art to clothing and curios – which draws a seriously craft-hungry crowd. The country’s premier design and lifestyle event, this tempting three-day trade show at the World Trade Center, and a few nearby venues, features a smartly curated mix of local designs that will look fab in your home or would make unique gifts.

Don’t miss the beautiful Artisans Village, promoting local workmanship from the islands, including weaving, wood-carving and metalwork. Designer PJ Aranador helms a display picking up on trends including the rainforest, grey, nudes, gold, coral reef and papaya, foregrounding sustainable materials abaca and raffia, alongside traditional handmade techniques.

Teaming artisan skills with contempo sensibilities, Manila Wear is a section devoted to fab Filipino fashion that aims to develop the industry, curated by fashion icon Josie Natori. Look out for young talent showcase Red Box and the Cococoir Exhibit, showcasing potential applications for coco coir and other indigenous materials. Spring Forward promotes the country’s craftsmen, artisans and young designers.
