Treasures to Take Home

August 31, 2015

So it’s your last day in Manila. You’ve wandered around Intramuros, eaten outstanding sinigang (preferably at Locavore) and sipped lush libations at buzzy little boite Finders Keepers. You’re all set to jet, when you realise the all-important job of getting some pasalubongs (that’s local lingo for gifts you give to friends and family) has been overlooked.

Well, fret not, because, thankfully, there is Kultura. This one-stop shop is stocked with an extensive array of local artisanal decor items, fashion and giftware, any of which would make the perfect Filipino memento.

There are several stores across the city, but head for the conveniently central Makati branch inside the Ayala Center mall.

Behind a large glass facade you’ll find a covetable cache of products ranging from traditional tikog woven purses and pretty pina fabrics (made from the fibres of dried pineapple leaves) to simple hand-dyed sarongs and graphic tees by the capital’s favourite street label Team Manila.

The svelte selection of South Sea pearls are so nice you’ll certainly have to keep a piece for yourself, or if you want to give into your kitsch craving there’s no shortage of items emblazoned with ‘I heart the Philippines’ – from totes to towels to snowglobes.

For items that will be appreciated by someone other than the lucky recipient, there’s also the Crafts for a Cause collection: special products which support foundations working with marginalised communities. Take-home treasures sorted!
