Summer Style, Sorted

June 15, 2015
House of Laurel

Manila’s weather forecast for the next few months is quintessentially tropical, with daily temps in the mid 30s and more than a smattering of heavy rainfall. And although the heat never truly relents in the Philippine capital, peak season can tempt even the most style-savvy locals to forgo fashion in favour of a poncho and a pair of Hunter wellies.

Luckily, however, the city’s die-hard sartorialists need not fret, thanks in large part to homegrown design sensation, House of Laurel by Rajo Laurel.

Laurel is to the Philippines what Michael Kors is to the US – the brains behind a celebrated local brand turned household name, and a long-time judge on Project Runway (in Laurel’s case, of the Filipino edition).

And he’s not just a dapper dandy who struck luck, either, having honed his gimlet eye and trademark technique overseas at both New York’s FIT and London’s Central Saint Martins, before returning to the archipelago to launch his contemporary empire, now 15 years in the making.

The S/S ‘Matisse’ collection takes cues and colours from the iconic Frenchman’s artworks. Think: bright, poppy prints in breezy silhouettes like shift minidresses and cut-out jumpsuits for ladies; and colour-blocked button-downs, polos, and cuffed shorts for gents. Just add Nine by Rajo maternity wear and the Rajito kids’ collection, and you’ve got the whole fam stylishly attired for the sultry summer days ahead. Sorted.
