Award-Bagging Sing-Song

November 07, 2016
Fun Home

Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga stars opposite Broadway actor Eric Kunze in the most acclaimed musical of 2015, based on comic artist Alison Bechdel's bestselling 2006 graphic memoir of family life.

Boundary-breaking Fun Home isn’t the cliched stuff of musicals – exploring Bechdel’s own story as a young lesbian growing up in small town Pennsylvania, with a closeted gay funeral director dad – but the darkly humorous book earned rave reviews from readers and critics alike, morphing into a successful off-Broadway stage musical in 2013. It skipped on to Broadway proper, bagging five Tony Awards in 2015, including Original Score, Direction, Book and Best Musical.

Now this must-see production celebrates its international premiere in Manila with a limited run of 18 performances only. Lea Salonga, playing Bechdel’s mother Helen, will be reunited after 23 years with her former Les Misérables leading man Eric Kunze, once Marius to her Eponine on Broadway. Kunze plays Bechdel’s brilliant but volatile father Bruce, with three actresses playing Alison at different ages, including Cris Villonco as her adult incarnation.

Featuring music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Lisa Kron and directed by Bobby Garcia, this honest, original musical moves between the past (Bechdel’s alternative childhood in the family funeral home) and present, as she discovers both her own sexuality and her father’s secret torment. Expect quirky dysfunction not big dance numbers, and plenty of emotional punch. Pass the tissues!
