Magical Musical Must-See

December 05, 2016
The Peninsula Christmas Concert

Christmas is all about tradition – decorating the tree, putting snacks out for Santa’s reindeer and leaving your gift shopping to a last-minute frenzy! Add to that list: attending The Pen’s annual Christmas Concert, a favourite holiday celebration in Manila for over 30 years. Amid all the festive action, it’s a chance to pause and soak in the season, accompanied by darn good tunes.

Locals and tourists-in-the-know flock to the hotel’s grand lobby on Saturday 10 December, which takes on a cathedral-like atmosphere as it hosts the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the country’s top ensemble, and a 50-voice choir. Guest conductor Ruggero Barbieri will wield the baton, with a concert repertoire spanning classical pieces, local Pinoy songs, and all-time Christmas favourites. Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Handel are on the playlist, with the audience singing along to the Messiah’s Hallelujah Chorus. Also on stage will be soprano Stephanie Aguilar, mezzo soprano Krissan Manikan, and tenor Lemuel dela Cruz, plus pop and theatre star Bituin Escalante.

Snap up a seat from PHP1,650, and you’ll also be doing your bit for charity. Part of the proceeds will go to The Peninsula’s Hope for the Philippines fund to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. 2016’s donations will support the education and livelihood of The Peninsula-GK Village, housing displaced families. This musical must-see proves you don’t have to hit the sherry to get into the Christmas spirit!
