The Ocean

Island views, passing yachts, tropical foliage and a true-blue sea… Glam beachside restos in HK are rare, which explains why this seductive new oceanfront number has proved such a hit. Set on a lofty waterfront perch at Repulse Bay, The Ocean’s sleek, light-filled interiors offer jaw-dropping vistas through floor-to-ceiling windows, best admired from one of the curvy blue-and-white booths of come-hither banquettes. Even the glass pendant lights, in dreamy turquoise, look like alluring aquatic creatures.

Fitting in perfectly with the impressive seaside panoramas, semi-private rooms are enclosed by jellyfish aquariums (how very Bond villain), while upstairs is an outdoor terrace with cabanas and Japanese ofuro tubs (ideal for relaxing while peering into neighbouring designer homes).

Naturally, the cuisine takes its cue from the deep blue, with so-now sustainable seafood sourced from Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji fish market. Expect à la carte delicacies such as charcoal-grilled langoustine with farro and ume lingonberry or marinated bay scallop and sea snail with green papaya salad. Delicious degustations include Spring’s The Ocean of Art menu, a five-course tasting extravaganza that whisks you from Sea Breeze to Coastal View via Blue Lagoon, and indulgent champagne-fuelled lunches.

Add to that sublime sushi from the hinoki-flanked UMI Bar, an authentic omakase experience helmed by Japanese chef Yukio Kimijima (a 6th-gen sushi master), plus designer cocktails aplenty, and you’ve found your fave new summer hangout. So nautical, so chic…
