Pack Your Trunk, Nelly

March 02, 2015

Louis Vuitton? Pah! If you want to travel in true French style, look no further than one of the nation’s oldest trunk-makers, Moynat. Dating back to 1849, the illustrious Parisian luggage label was once supplier to famed theatre troupe La Comédie-Française and has been at the very cusp of cutting edge since conceptualising the waterproof trunk. Today, with Hermès alum Ramesh Nair at the helm as creative director, Moynat is widening its retail footprint with its first ever store outside France on London’s ritzy Mount Street, and now its first ever Asian incarnation in (where other than) luxury-loving Hong Kong.

Lavishly ensconced on the ground floor of haute shopping palace The Landmark, the crisp, minimal space of glossy wooden shelves is home to a prêt-à-porter display of impeccably handcrafted candy-coloured and neutral-hued leather goods. But made-to-measure is where Moynat really comes into a league of its own. Shoppers can modify their wares, from vintage-style trunks to calfskin-lined handbags sporting the brand’s signature lock to briefcases with concave bases made to fit the boot of any automobile. And for anyone looking to take their personalisation to the next level, Moynat will even have an expert craftsman hand-paint your initials onto your new valise. Parfait!
