As anyone who has experienced Barcelona’s legendary electronic music festival Sónar can tell you, this is nirvana for dance fans. The original takes over the Catalan city’s streets, with indoor and alfresco spaces pulsing with juicy DJ beats and eclectic gigs. Founded in 1994, Sónar is considered the world’s most respected electronic music and arts festival. It’s loud, it’s proud and it draws devotees from around the globe, keen to sample its cutting-edge tunes, digital culture and visual arts.
Now, the best-of-Barcelona makes its debut in the Fragrant Harbour, occupying six stages at Hong Kong Science Park on Saturday 1 April (11am-3am), with an impressive lineup of live acts and DJs, as well as a creative technology programme. The first HK edition boasts a curated mix of established acts and emerging talent, with live performances, DJ sets, dance-floor thrillers and experimental electronica.
Indoor venues span mega-scale SonarClub, edgy SonarLab, all-seater SonarComplex (in the Egg auditorium) and bass-heavy SonarPub, with major-stage SonarVillage and harbourside SonarDôme outdoors. Headliners include the UK’s ‘Baron of Techno’ Dave Clarke, American innovator DJ Shadow, fierce German DJ/musician Ellen Allien and on-the-up UK producer Evian Christ. Don’t miss legendary Brit DJ Gilles Peterson, genre-blending genius Clark and rap MC Lady Leshurr.
