Art Attack

March 26, 2018

March might well be known as Art Month in Hong Kong, but many of the city’s events and exhibitions are sprinkling their creative sparkle through to mid April. Don your culture specs and prepare to feast your eyes on this inspiring collection.

If you’re in town at the end of March, there’s still time to take in Art Basel, Hong Kong’s grandest and glitteriest art fair, now firmly ensconced on the international arts calendar. Check out emerging talents or spot established artists from over 248 galleries from 32 countries. Attracting a cosmo, creative crowd, the people watching alone is worthy of the entry ticket.

If you like to be ahead of the curve, be among the first to visit David Zwirner’s recently opened H Queen’s Gallery, which is hosting the Hong Kong debut of German shutterbug Wolfgang Tillmans. Having exhibited at Tate Modern and Foundation Beyeler (Basel), among other superstar galleries, Tillman’s no stranger to big-name art cities. What will HK make of his unique abstracts and perspectives? Pop along and decide for yourself.

For an alfresco artscapade, stride over to Hong Kong Sculpture Park, a first of its kind showcase along the harbourfront promenade. Presented by Hong Kong Arts Centre, the outdoor (and free) exhibition features works by a host of local and global names, from Zhan Wang to Yayoi Kusama and Antony Gormley, set against the Insta-worthy backdrop of the city’s skyline.

Need a post-show refresher? Swish Zuma Lounge is jumping on the arty bandwagon with a joint celebration of Art Month and Sakura season. The bar has been transformed with a huge installation by floral artist Kirk Cheng, while a delish Sakura-infused cocktail and light-bite menu are for your delectation through to the end of April. Now that’s Sm-ART.
