Halloween in Hong Kong

October 23, 2017

Hoping to have a dreadfully good Halloween in Hong Kong this year? Of course you are. This is LUXE’s ghastly-good round-up of terror-ific things to do...

You wouldn’t normally find LUXE at Disneyland or Ocean Park – but Halloween is no normal time of year. Join the band of self-proclaimed Vile Villains at Disney’s after-dark Halloween Party (come dressed as your fave Disney baddie or goodie, obv). Get ghoulishly lost in the Maze of Madness, go trick-or-treating in the gardens or attend a (much-less-scary) daytime shindig with Mickey and the gang.

Join the mammals and marine life over at Ocean Park (until 31 Oct), whose Halloween extras include a cast of ghosts and vampires lurking in the shadows… If you’re brave enough, snoop around haunted house Phobia 17, or catch the tremor-endously good Scaremonies show, starring some hellish anti-heroes.

Jeans-plus-T-shirt just won’t cut it during Halloween. For your blood-curdling costumes needs, just head to cobbled, colour-pop Pottinger Street, which sells absolutely anything and everything your dark side could dream of. Conjure up your wildest Halloween outfit and trawl the stalls for its components: we’re talking fright-night masks, mad accessories, offbeat uniforms, hats and wigs a-go-go – and plenty more.

Dressed to distress, head to feral-but-fun bar-hop spectacle Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s infamous nightlife area, which is rowdy all-year round but particularly vibrant during the annual scare-fest. Expect bright lights, jelly shots and a riot (plus a headache, the morning after).

Prefer your terror on the tasteful side? Duck into Duddell’s, a gastrodome-cum-art gallery and swell patio where social scenesters sup on Mich-starred Canto cuisine. For Halloween, this dapper Dud is hosting a mysterious Masked Ball, in collabo with the Royal Society of Explorers and Anthropologists. Top hats, gold-topped canes, Victorian lace and monocles: advisory.

For spookily good cocktails, hit up Foxglove, a one-of-a-kind, 30s-inspired lounge lair disguised behind a faux (yet exquisitely styled) brolly shop frontage. Foxglove delivers swingin’ live jazz sets, and combines vintage vibes and edgy modernity with surprising aplomb. Expect lashings of leather and blue velvet, plus potent craft cocktails. Absinthe seems an appropriate poison of choice: try the Eastern Promise, which stars pepper-infused gin, yuzu marmalade, guava, star anise and a splash of the zombie-green stuff.

Fancy dress doesn’t have to be a tack-fest, as The Peninsula will prove this Halloween. The swish hotel is hosting a tasty Halloween party at Felix, its glittering restaurant-bar. A dangerously delicious dessert buffet will be served at Felixs Crazy Box; add inventive cocktails to the equation, for ultimate thrills.
