The Peninsula Sky Rink
Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it Santa and his reindeer zipping across Chi-town’s twinkling skyline? Looks like you’ve had enough eggnog, dearie – it’s actually The Peninsula Sky Rink, an outdoor, rooftop skating arena, and one of the few things that can coax Chicagoans and visitors away from their crackling fires and out into the city’s wintry wonderland.
Nestled on the deck of the hotel’s Shanghai Terrace restaurant – four floors above the magical Magnificent Mile – the 2,100-sq-ft Sky Rink comes complete with a Swiss-style chalet, snow-flecked pine trees and a fittingly festive soundtrack, all overlooking the iconic John Hancock building and beyond.
Hotel, restaurant and spa guests can whizz around on rented skates, the full proceeds of which will be donated to two local children’s charities, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Hephzibah Children’s Association. Last year, the rink raised a whopping US$33,000 for these amazing causes.
However, although it’s open daily, it can also be booked for private events so keen gliders are advised to call ahead to confirm availability.
And, for the après, The Chalet serves a superb selection of winter-warmers to keep the chills at bay, including indulgent bites, satisfyingly decadent hot chocolate, and Glühwein, a toasty German spiced wine. Get your skates on!
