Good as Gold

Sidney Garber
While most children her age were busy ‘knuckling down’ for a game of marbles or glued to the TV for the latest episode of Howdy Doody, six-year-old Brooke Neidich was already hard at work in her father’s jewellery boutique. Not that she minded. Her gimlet-eyed old man was none other than Sidney Garber, one of Chi-town’s top gem-trepreneurs, who had been responsible for adorning the Windy City’s glittering elite since 1946.

Fast forward 50 years and Garber’s eponymous boutique still occupies the same esteemed location, just around the corner from the Magnificent Mile. The only difference now is that his daughter has moved up the ranks – at least as director she doesn’t have to wipe the windows clean if she doesn’t want to. Counting sartorial stalwarts the Olsen twins among its biggest fans, the brand has enjoyed a recent resurgence as contemporary cool-hunters treasure the timeless elegance of its prize pieces, particularly the spunky n’ chunky cuffs – stack them for maximum effect. And the best thing about Sidney Garber? It’s guilt-free shopping. Neidich gives all the profits to charities dedicated to children’s mental health and wellness, education and the arts. How’s that for retail therapy?
