Ever wondered what happens to contestants of hit reality TV after the show’s over? In some cases (ahem, the sisters Kardashian; Snooki and The Situation) the limelight never stops shining, while others slip maddeningly beneath the radar… Thankfully, Top Chef season 9 finalist Beverly Kim has resurfaced, much to the delight of hungry Chicagoans. After Kim and her husband Johnny Clark closed down acclaimed fine diner Bonsoirée in 2012, the pair have made a comeback via their recently opened Korean-American restaurant Parachute, set in the up-and-coming nabe of Avondale.
Within Parachute’s minimalist, 40-seat space of exposed brick, blond wood surfaces and shelves made from repurposed stereo speakers, Kim and Clark prepare their ingredient-driven menu of Korean classics given an American twist. Expect regular appearances from the pork belly and mung bean pancake with kimchi and black garlic; dolsot bibimbap with Thunder Bay trout, Swiss chard, radishes, and raw duck egg served in a sizzling-hot stone bowl; and baked apple with burnt miso ice-cream topped with pine nuts and sage. Drinks also take an Asian slant, with the likes of fermented rice makgeolli and iced Assam milk tea with tapioca balls serving as standouts. If there’s anything we can see that Kim learned from her stint on Bravo – it’s definitely not to give up!
