Lollapalooza Weekender

July 31, 2017

Hold onto your headphones, beat buffs… Chicago’s biggest and best music festival, Lollapalooza (also affectionately known as Lolla) is about to fire off again this 3-6 August. But don’t just rock up and plonk yourself down on the grass for four days, let LUXE show you where to shop, eat and play before and after this all-singing, all-dancing musical extravaganza.

Now, where to find that showstopper get-up? Avoid same-outfit cringe with a spree at Luxury Garage Sale, shelving an immaculate stash of unique past-season pretties and ‘gently used’ garms from the likes of YSL, Margiela and McQueen, as well as a wall lined with purses and a scandal of shoes. Or, in the same mall and on the same floor, beckons Space519 – billed as a ‘general store’, this glossy go-to ain’t no small-town shoppe, but a trove of globally sourced guy and gal togs, accessories, and more.

That shopathon has surely worked up an appetite, so grab a 15-min cab over to West Loop to join the queue outside hot-right-now Au Cheval. This rammed, moody and macho meat fest offers the kind of pre-party sustenance you need, with 30+ brews on tap, a fistful of burgers, crispy fries worth the calorie blowout, and even a salad or two for the faint of heart attack. While just around the corner is RM Champagne Salon, an intimate cobblestoned courtyard shrine to artisanal, small-batch, local and single-estate bubbles – just the place to warm up those dancing shoes before your festival foray.

For Lolla itself, we recommended getting those mani’d mitts on a pair of new-this-year VIP or Platinum tickets, which will not only get you fast-track gate access and exclusive lounge chill time (with special artist appearances), but also side-stage crowd-free platforms and cordoned-off front row views. Highlights of this year’s impressive lineup include everything from rock acts like Ryan Adams, The Killers, and Muse to indie ensembles Alt-J and Arcade Fire to hip hop heavyweights Run the Jewels and Wiz Khalifa.

Hit up one of the official after-party shows at our fave hipspot Thalia Hall (Thu-Sat), or head over to River North for this sultry duo... Subterranean tiki-tinged cocktailer Three Dots and a Dash will transport you to far-flung shores with its eclectic decor and immaculate tipples by mix-meister Paul McGee. A grand tiki god oversees the 150+ bottles of rum sourced from all over the world. Or, join the long lines of long-legged beauties outside dance n’ prancer Studio Paris, and work it into the wee hours with VIP lounge, retractable roof and state-of-the-art Funktion One sound system busting some serious electro beats.
