Hip Hop History

September 19, 2016

Which show has bagged 11 Tony Awards, is a truly American musical, and sells out within seconds? Why, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip hop-flavoured biography bonanza Hamilton, of course! A huge hit on New York’s Broadway, this game-changing musical number has made American history hot.

And lucky for Chicagoans, the rave-reviewed, sold-out, transformative pop-infused showcase about Alexander Hamilton and his fellow Founding Fathers is arriving on the Windy City’s Broadway this 27 September.

Rising from rags in the Caribbean to become the first US Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton winds up fighting a dramatic duel. An unlikely theatrical phenomenon, the show has earned kudos for putting African-American, Asian and Latino experience at the heart of America’s birth, with an all-black/ethnic cast performing the numbers in vernacular speech.

For the Chicago run, the show has crewed up with an entirely new cast, including lesser-known young actor Miguel Cervantes in the title role of Hamilton, two-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry as his arch-nemesis Aaron Burr, and Tony winner Karen Olivo as Hamilton’s sister-in-law Angelica Schuyler.

Oprah, Obama, Kanye and Beyoncé are all fans. Need we say more? Expect tickets to sell like hot cakes!
