Green Mill Cocktail Lounge
Much like its hometown Chicago, storied tavern the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge boasts a colourful history of intrigue, conflict and changing fortunes, having survived gangster ownership, the Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Named in homage to Paris’ own infamous Red Mill (you might know her as the Moulin Rouge), this only marginally younger American rendition plays host to some of the best jazz acts in the world, as well as the internationally renowned Uptown Poetry Slam contest.

You’ll need to swoop in early if you’re hoping to secure ringside seats – the place was and still is ‘mob’bed. If you’re seriously lucky (or handy with a knuckle duster) you might even swing Al Capone’s booth, which was reputedly positioned so that he could keep an eye on both entrances – what a friendly fella. Everything from the cheap-as-chips cover charge to the simple drinks list is unapologetically old-fashioned, so you can forget sidling up to a faffy craft creation, this bar serves only traditional American cocktails. Or, if you want to put some hair on your chest, plump for a shot of locally distilled liquor, Jeppson’s Malört.

And last but not least, the stage sees a stellar line-up of trad, Bebop, contempo and improv jazz. However, be mindful of the fact that performances here are a serious business; so turn off your phone and pipe down, or prepare to witness another St Valentine's Day massacre unfold.
